Down To The Basics

What is CBD (Cannabidiol?)

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of over 100 cannabinoids identified in cannabis plants. Since 2014, seed companies, commercial growers, and scientists have worked to develop strains of industrial hemp that contain high concentrations of CBD (10% to 20%+) with only small amounts of THC (below 0.3% by weight).

CBD, in various concentrations can be found in many retail products including topical, sublingual, ingestible, and smokable forms. Although CBD, when legally derived from industrial hemp, is legal in all 50 states in the USA, some local, state, and federal authorities still place restrictions on the type of products and delivery methods that are legal. The FDA’s current stance on CBD is that it is a drug, and therefore not legal to add to any type of human or animal food. Still, these products are widely available online and in many retail locations throughout the nation.

What is the difference between CBD Isolate vs. Broad Spectrum vs. Full Spectrum?

The hemp industry has not done a great job of implementing any self-regulation on the labeling products deemed by the manufacturer or retailer to be THC Free, Broad or Full Spectrum.

The primary thing to know is that products made from only CBD isolate greater than 99% pure CBD are likely the only products that are THC Free.

Broad Spectrum generally indicates that the product also contains other cannabinoids, which may include trace amounts of THC.

Full Spectrum products generally contain cannabinoids, including THC, at higher concentrations than Broad Spectrum products.

But the truth is that if a product were truly Full Spectrum and contained all of the extracted components of the hemp plant, it would taste terrible. So, labeling of products containing CBD and other cannabinoids creates a “buyer beware” situation. Although most companies do or can provide a certificate of analysis (COA) that shows the amounts of cannabinoids contained in a product, there is no guarantee that the COA is actually tied directly to the product you purchased. And COAs can be difficult to read or understand for many consumers.

What if I'm worried about passing a drug test?

Use only THC Free products manufactured from CBD isolate greater than 99% pure CBD. Avoid ingesting or applying topically any product labeled as Broad or Full Spectrum.

What is the right dosage for me?

Across the entire cannabis industry, you will often hear or see advice like, “Start low and go slow.” This is generally good advice when incorporating any product into your daily routine. As a consumer, you have to decide if you prefer to purchase and try a lower milligram product or to purchase a higher milligram product. You know best the result you are trying to achieve. Although some companies make health claims or representations about uses of their products, it is not legal to do this with products containing CBD, and the FDA may issue the company a warning letter to cease and desist on making claims.

Most companies will name their product something that indicates the intended use. Other general use products, such as those containing over 1,000mg per ounce of CBD or combined cannabinoids should be used with caution. You should consult your physician to discuss the use of CBD, especially if you have underlying conditions which are being treated with prescription medication. Regardless, taking smaller doses more often during the day, and not exceeding the recommended daily dose, will work better for most people.

How long will it be before I notice a difference?

It depends on many factors, including your metabolism and the number of milligrams you utilize daily. For topical products, you should feel a positive effect within a few minutes of use. For sublingual and ingestible products it may take an hour to feel positive improvement. If you are ingesting smaller doses of a product as a prophylaxis, it may take 2-4 weeks to see any improvement, and that improvement may not be something you “feel” until you stop taking the product.

Can I get high from taking CBD?

Not from taking CBD alone, but if the product contains other cannabinoids, or cannabinoids that are psychoactive, such as THC, there is the possibility you will feel a euphoric effect. It is best when starting a CBD product regimen to do so while you are at home and not driving, operating equipment, or engaged in an activity which can easily lead to injury due to impairment.

How do I know if I'm taking a good quality CBD product?

Most importantly, it is good to know if the company that manufactures the product is properly licensed by the state where they operate, and are also certified by third party inspection agencies. Our products are manufactured under a food grade facility license from the State of Tennessee, under current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) compliance, and our facility is registered with the Food & Drug Administration (FDA).

Can I mix CBD oil in my food?

If the product is intended for ingestion, yes you can. Just know that the oil will not blend into water based recipes. Also, extreme, prolonged heat over 300F may degrade or destroy the CBD/cannabinoid content. But adding CBD as a topping or blended with your favorite salad or cooking oil is an option.

What if I don't like the taste of CBD oil?

You can purchase size 0 or 00 gelatin capsules and fill and swallow them. You may lose some efficacy versus sublingual uptake, but you will avoid the taste. Also, some products contain essential oil and terpene blends to improve the taste. You can also add a few drops of your favorite food quality flavoring to your products - but be careful to not add too much as most flavorings are concentrated and potent.

Will using a CBD topical make me fail a drug test?

If it is made with 99%+ pure CBD isolate, it should not. If the topical contains THC its use may result in a positive drug test, although this is less likely than with an ingestible.

Will CBD make my dog high?

Giving CBD to your pet may cause a change in behavior. If your dog, for instance, tends to be calmer or sleep more after ingestion, that can be expected. If you are treating your dog for pain issues and they become more active after use, that is likely the positive result you were seeking. But if your dog becomes lethargic or clumsy after ingestion, cut back on the dosage and consult your veterinarian. Just remember, they likely weigh less than you. So, adjust their doses accordingly and remember to “Start low and go slow.
